ADVOCATES ON CAPITOL HILL

Users of Augmentative Communication Speak Out

Tyler Fihe briefs
House Members and staff

Members of the “Breaking the Barriers” Team visited Congress and held a very successful briefing for House Members and their staff on September 21, 2006 in the Capitol Building.

Advocates Larry Bissonnette, Jamie Burke, Tyler Fihe, Tracy Thresher, and Project Co-Director Christi Hendrickson used a combination of video clips, augmentative communication devices and power point presentations to lobby for public policies and funding that support the right of individuals with disabilities who cannot speak to access a full range of alternative and augmentative communication options.

The presentations were powerful and emotional as advocates told their personal stories about overcoming the many barriers they faced and shared important information about how alternative and augmentative forms of communications make a positive difference in the lives of people with autism and many other citizens with disabilities nationwide.

The presentations were stark in pointing out that despite media attention to the “autism epidemic”, people with autism and other communication-based disabilities face tremendous attitudinal and fiscal barriers that prevent them from accessing communication supports and services. Each of their stories pointed out the critical need to ensure that children with autism learn the communication and social skills they need to succeed in school, that youth with autism are able to graduate with higher level communication skills needed for further education and training for work, and that adults with autism must have to become effective employees and to fully participate in their communities.

The briefing was sponsored by Representatives Chris Smith (D-New Jersey) and Mike Doyle (R-Pennsylvania), Co-chairs of the House Coalition for Autism Research and Education (CARE).

The Breaking the Barriers Project is funded by the NLM Foundation. It is administered by TASH. The Advocacy Institute provided consulting and support for the project's policy activities.
